Abstract
This thesis assesses the effects of the development in an emerging urban center (EUC) on its rural hinterlands. A case study approach is applied using the concept of livelihoods to analyze the effects on the lives of the inhabitants in the village. The village is in transition due to the impact from the EUC. Flows of people, goods and information link the two places and the villagers are exposed to an increased variety of items which imparts increased consumerism in the village. The investment milieu is increased and the possibilities for engaging in non-farm activities likewise. Possibilities for market integration are increased due to the development in the EUC, and sectoral linkages between agriculture and services are found to function synergistically through rural-urban linkages. The development in the EUC is perceived as a benefit to the village, although it is unevenly distributed, distorted towards the wealthier households.
