Project summary

The overall objective of the research project is to contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between labour market regulation, wages and employment. The project is based mostly on survey data of small and medium manufacturing firms in Vietnam during the period 2007 to 2011. Given the importance of the informal sector in Vietnam, the project covers both the formal and informal sectors and examines the economic outcomes associated with formalization. The project is organised within the institutional framework of the Development Economics Research Group (DERG) at the Department of Economics, Copenhagen University. The project activities include the preparation of survey questionnaires, data gathering (quantitative and qualitative) and analysis, production of publications and participation in relevant Ph.D. courses and seminars. The key outputs of the project are four academic papers which together will form the Ph.D. thesis. The key indicators of achievement will be the publication of the papers in internationally refereed journals. In addition, the research findings will be incorporated in the outputs of the FFU/DERG project (DFC project no. 85-08-KU) including working papers and policy briefs. The research results will also be presented in PhD seminars, research workshops and international conferences (including in Vietnam). Other communication channels include the ‘Regulating for Decent Work Network’ of the International Labour Organization (ILO) with which the project coordinator has close personal and professional links.
